Hold Your Breath

Gay and Sue

When bowling, it is important to concentrate and keep your eye on the line. This method usually results in very serious expressions as beautifully demonstrated here by Gay and Sue. They are truly having fun, despite the outward demeanour.

Bring It In and Bring It On

Our Club’s Charity Day takes place on Sunday with the Spider competition (£1) plus the bowling match. (£2.50). Volunteers will spend Saturday preparing for the following day, so please remember to bring in any raffle and tombola donations before Saturday morning. On Sunday you will need to bring yourself (minimum), plenty of dough and your bowls.

Don’t forget your bowls

Countdown: 6-Days To Go

Next Sunday is the Club’s special event to raise funds for the local primary school in Deganwy to help them provide a shed to serve vegetables and healthy food options to the children. In the same way that playing bowls is a great way of staying fit and healthy, the outcome of the day will be our way of supporting the good health of the children in our local school.

The Spider will be the first event of the day so arrive by 1:00pm if you want to take part in it. The bowling event will start at 1:30pm, straight after the Spider.

News: Rain Doesn’t Stop Play!

The second of the Vardre Deganwy trips to the Prestatyn Indoor Bowling Centre took place on Friday. Ironically, it was a lovely sunny day outside. Another visit is bound to be arranged so do take the opportunity to try out indoor bowling with tuition by our very own John Probyn and Gay Hiçdönmez. Click Here for a few photos of the day.

An Occasional Item: #15 Laws of the Game

QUESTION: During a league doubles match, are members who have finished their match and are not currently playing a match on the green, allowed to be on the green commenting on another’s players match guiding/coaching their team mates?

ANSWER: Rule 9.2 – No person, other than the players and the Referee, is allowed on the green (except Measurers when their services are required).

Nothing in this Law will apply to a severely disabled person who needs assistance on the green.

NOTE: There is nothing in the Laws to stop coaching by people who are off the green. There may be a problem with players from another game on the green offering coaching/advice to players as they could be considered not to be covered under Law 9.2 which is intended to apply to the players, referee and measurers for an individual game. Other players from another game could give an opinion on who is on just as is the normal practice in non-officially refereed matches, e.g. league matches when a player asks someone off the green to advise them on who is on, as long as it is done at the appropriate time.

Just 9-Days Away

Dave H circulated a reminder to Members on Wednesday evening about the Club’s charity fundraising day to be held on 30th July with all proceeds to be donated to our local primary school in Deganwy, as requested by the late David Rogers Jones, our previous Chairman. Let’s make it a day to remember – come rain or shine. Hopefully, the recent rainfalls will not occur so that the Spider competition and all the other things great planned for the day can be enjoyed without the need for full wet weather gear.

The day starts at 1:00pm if you want to participate in the Spider (£1 entry) which will take place at 1:30pm with a good prize to be won. The bowls match (£2.50 pp entry) will take place immediately after that.

If you can donate a Tombola and Raffle Prize/s then please bring it/them along to the Clubhouse in the next week so that all prep can be done on Saturday 29th July. Thank you to everyone for supporting this event.

Shock Tactics

Now, only a few of us know what this scene was all about. What do you think? Choose from one of the following or send in another suggestion:

Arthur, Clarice, Esther (behind) and Tom C (Right rear)
  • A tsunami is about to strike from the Conwy estuary side of the green;
  • Our own barber shop quartet of Esther, Tom C, Clarice and Arthur entertain us all whilst the visiting team rolls up on the green;
  • Arthur is in the process of being mugged by Clarice for money but he puts up a pretty good fight;
  • Clarice asks Arthur to semaphore the game score to the players on the other side of the green;
  • Clarice has previously warned Arthur about singing and dancing on the sidelines whilst a game is in progress.

Baldachin?

What has Tommy been up to? He’s preparing for a new addition to our bowling club. Perhaps not exactly a baldachin (a particular type of canopy), but we should soon have an awning so that both the Home team and the Away team have some better protection from the rain or the sunshine.

How is Tommy preparing? By painting the wooden supports needed for the awning. There’s no rest for any of our volunteers who keep the club well maintained during every month of the year.

Just Like That

Captured on film – the moment before Esther threw a glass of water over Ann. Not really. Esther was just showing Ann one of her magic tricks with a glass of water and a hat. You should ask her, next time you see her, to show you how it works.

P.S. What was Tommy up to yesterday? Find out here tomorrow morning.
