CERN stands for the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The acronym CERN originally represented the French words “Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire” (European Council for Nuclear Research), which was a provisional council established by 12 European governments in 1952 to build the laboratory. In 1954, the provisional council was dissolved, and the organization was officially established as the Organisation Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire (European Organization for Nuclear Research). Despite the name change, the acronym CERN was retained.
