No Room For It

The George Masters Competition was held at George Warley, Birmingham, on 1st October 2022, but the main news from the event was the bad behaviour of some of the spectators. On the receiving end of verbal abuse and physical threats on his way to finishing as Runner-Up the Final was Callum Wraight. He was one of the competitors who participated in the Conwy Bowls Festival 2022, playing here at Vardre Deganwy, and he won the BCGBA Senior Individual Merit Title 2022.

Callum Wraight when he competed in the Conwy Bowls Festival 2022 playing at Vardre Deganwy Bowling Green. Thanks to David L for the tip-off on this recent news item.

Calls have now been made by the Shropshire Executive for the British Crown Green Bowling Association (BCGBA) to seek ways to address this type of unacceptable behaviour.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. is the focus of the Bowls Development Alliance (BDA) whose policy “Code of Conduct in Bowls” was adopted by Vardre Deganwy Bowling Club in 2022. It applies to everyone involved in the sport, i.e. staff, club officials, coaches, volunteers, players and spectators. What does R.E.S.P.E.C.T. stand for?

  • Respect all participants and decisions
  • Encourage everyone
  • Sportsmanship
  • Play for enjoyment
  • Educate and be knowledgeable
  • Conduct yourself courteously
  • Treat everyone fairly
