JUNIOR SECTION REPORT 2019
In many ways it has been a disappointing year in terms of juniors, as despite a bigger recruitment attempt at the start of the year numbers this season have been at their lowest. As well as our Open Day sessions, I contacted 1 Junior school and 4 Secondary schools in the area advertising our practice sessions (and alternative ideas) to try and get youngsters bowling. Sadly only 6 young bowlers were present at some point during the season and this petered out to just 2 regulars towards the end. Both these lads are competent players and ready for competitive matches possibly next season, but both are academic young men also, and GCSE exams are looming next summer. It was also a disappointment that the Wednesday League Junior Competition that we had entered them in, and worked towards, was cancelled due to lack of numbers. Big thanks to my assistants Alan and Tommy, although we often out-numbered our pupils at the sessions, but we shall continue next year and look at other possible methods of recruitment. Similar to Gwyn this season, a good start is actually bringing a family member (or friend) down to the green and get bowling, although Gwyn’s youngster is over 6ft tall and looks more like his bodyguard!!
