Junior history

Derrick Evans

Vardre Bowling Club decided in 2014 to start a Junior Section. Two of our members Derrick Evans and Dave Holland successfully attended an Assistant Coaches course in Ruthin.

An application was made for a grant from Sports Wales Community Chest to allow the purchase of appropriate equipment and to train up more coaches.

As a result of the successful application we were awarded £750.00 enabling us to purchase five sets of bowls and train up another eight coaches. These being Ian Wilson, Martin James, Kath Savage, Ian Savage, Liz Curtis, Dave Leech, Gwyn Hughes and John Stanley.

Contact was made with Haf Williams the Head teacher of Ysgol Deganwy inviting pupils from the school to attend coaching sessions. This resulted in some thirteen pupils attending the initial course. The original lessons took place on a Wednesday afternoon after school.

It was decided to continue the sessions through the Summer holidays and these took place on a Thursday morning between 10.30am and 12.00 noon. There were a total of seven children taking part. The sessions were so popular that a decision was taken to continue them till until the 29th September at which time the participants were presented with a certificate by our local councillor Julie Fallon.

For the last three sessions in September following contact with Ysgol Deganwy, a further 15 to 17 additional children attended. This bodes well for next season and plans are being looked at for next year in order to accommodate this increase.

A request for a grant from Cartrefi Conwy Community Chest has been successful we have received a grant of £325.00 and are in the process of obtaining another five sets of woods ready for next season.
